Being like most locals, I visited the Arizona Memorial at one time or another - usually when I have a friend in town. Yesterday, I decided to check out the new visitors center that opened in time for the 69th aniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau - Waimea, Hawaii 09-10

The "EDDIE" is the most prestigious big-wave contest in the world. The event is named after Eddie Aikau - a famous Hawaiian waterman. The Eddie has only been held only 8 times in the last 25 years. This years winner was Greg Long of California.

I've lived on Oahu for my entire life yet I had never attended the Eddie Aikau Classic. I woke up early and drove my car to Lani's Beach. I parked along the road and rode my bike up to Waimea. Hundreds to spectators were there before the sunrise to catch the morning action. Waves of 30+ feet crashed on the shore of Waimea. Yeah... they'll be no jumping off Waimea rock today.

Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon on the Pacific. The drive from Lihue is quite far but well worth it!

This was my first time to see Waimea Canyon. I experienced the same breathless feeling that I felt when I saw the Grand Canyon.

Lydgate Park is neither the nicest nor the cleanest beach on Kauai but there are several things that make this park unique in the entire state.

I took this photo during sunrise. Yup, today is going to be a good day!

Lydgate beach has a man-made rock cove that protects swimmers from the rough surf and is perfect for snorkeling. This cover reminds me of the ones found at Magic Island and Ko' Olina.

A Heiau is sacred ground for Hawaiians. Hikinaakala means "Rising of the Sun".

I was surprised how well preserved this Heiau was - being that it was next to a public park. If this were on Oahu, heiau or not it would be trashed!

The beach was littered with the debris from trees. Entire tree trunks and huge branches litter the beach. It was almost like Hurricane Iniki had struck again!

I decided to park my car at the Hawaii Prince Hotel and found a parking meter that still had time in it (Sweet!). I left my truck there and took my bike (and my camera) and rode around Waikiki taking photos and looking like a tourist. Maui has become my new favorite Hawaiian Island. Not as crowded as Oahu yet not as country as Kauai - "Maui No ka Oi". Pictured above is the road to Haleakala when I brought my truck over on the Superferry.

Matsumoto's Shave Ice - A must-stop place on Oahu's North Shore

Manoa Valley is just minutes from Honolulu yet has the climate and weather of a tropical rainforest. The main campus of The University of Hawaii is also there.

Magic Island has a great view of Diamond Head and is right across the street from Ala Moana Center. In Hawaii, North Shore surf is relatively small in the summertime. However, surf on the South Shore has been as big as 8-10 ft.

Moanalua Gardens is a favorite place for Hawaii families to have a picnic. Pictured above is the famous Hitachi-tree.

Foster Botanical Garden is neither the largest nor the most spectacular garden of Oahu. What sets Foster apart is its proximity to downtown Honolulu. The garden itself is surrounded by a freeway and one of the state's busiest intersections. From the outside, one wouldn't be able to tell that there is a botanical garden. This makes Foster Garden a true hidden gem.

Sushi... I've had some of the best in Japan so having sushi anywhere else in the world just isn't the same. I gotta admit though, Yanagi Sushi comes pretty close.

Yanagi is known as one of the best Sushi restaurants in Honolulu. A friend took me there for my birthday once. We tried different types of Sushi rolls from soft-shell crab to spicy tuna. Oishi! (Delicious)

My cousin from Long Beach once called and asked me how things are here in Hawaii. I told her that everything was fine except that the sky reminded me of Los Angeles. I explained to her that in Hawaii we have something called VOG (the Hawaiian equivlent to SMOG). Volcanic smoke from Kilauea produce natural pollution which can engulf the entire island chain.

Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States and features the unique architecture called American Florentine. The palace was the home of Hawaii's last two monarchs, King David Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani

The VENUS building can be found on Waialae blvd close to the Garlic restaurant.

The Pearl City bike path winds along the shoreline of Pearl Harbor. Starting from Neal Blaisdell Park to Lehua Elementary and back is approximately 2 miles. Continuing on to Raindow Marina and back will give you approximately 8 miles total. A great place to run or ride a bike, this is where a friend and I would train for the Honolulu Marathon.

Should I stay or should I go? I woke up early this morning to take my bike on the Pearl City bike path. This morning is a bit chilly though, the temperature must be about 67 degrees (which is cold by Hawaii standards) brrrrr!!!!

In celebration of Earth Day this past wednesday, I chose to highlight nature in its most raw form. I wanted to showcase nature unadulterated by human hands and show photos that feature no sign of man-made items. Let me tell you, it was harder than I thought!

Manoa Falls trail starts by the entrance to the former Paradise Park and heads towards the mountains. The proximity from Honolulu make it a favorite place to hike for Oahu residents.

Mokuleia Beach on the North Shore of Oahu is where my old church would have their annual family camp.

This grassy trail leads to the parking lot of Tantalus lookout. The lookout features a magnificent view of the city of Honolulu in all its man-made glory. As for me, I think I enjoyed the grassy stroll than the lookout itself. You know what they say... "sometimes the journey is greater than the destination".

A friend and I must have spent an hour trying to taking photos of bees flying around. I wasn't able to get one in mid-air but I did get this nice one.

Kailua Beach Park is one of my favorite beaches on the island. My friends and I have had many beach parties at this beautiful shore.

***If you click on the above photo you'll see two swimmers in the water... "Darn humans, they always ruin the photo!" Nah! just joking!

Lanikai Beach has once been ranked the "Worlds best beach". With views like that, its not hard to see why. Not featured in this photo are the million-dollar oceanfront properties that have million-dollar views of the ocean. I guess you get what you pay for.

Matusmoto's Shave Ice

A trip to the North Shore just wouldn't be the same without stopping by Matsumoto's for some shave ice. In Japan, shave ice is known as "Kakigori" (Thank you Aya for the translation :) . I wanted to take a picture of my shave ice with ice cream and azuki beans... but I was too busy eating it!

Many locals have heard of La Mariana but have never been there. The restaurant can be found off of Sand Island access road fronting the reef runway. At times you can hear planes flying overhead departing Honolulu International Airport.

Being that it was still mid-morning, I just had a virgin Lava Flow. The Zombie and the Mai Tai here are pretty potent though... (so I've heard). Next time I'll get a picture of a drink in a tiki-glass.

Featured on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - Hawaii, this hard-to-find little dive is perhaps Oahu's last remaining authentic tiki-bar. Though I don't really drink, I did appreciate the decor of the joint - like something straight out of "Gilligan's Island". Some say its cheesy, others say its cool. I would have to agree with the latter.

Kakaako Waterfront Park

Kakaako Waterfront Park is a favorite among Hawaii residents for its beautiful grassy hillsides and ocean view. A close distance from Ala Moana Beach Park, Kakaako is easy to access and is a great place to have a picnic. Many families bring their children to frolic on the grassy hills and play in the beautiful Hawaiian sunshine. Today was a little overcast and windy but still beautiful.

Airports. I love going there when I'm the one leaving. Whenever I drop off someone at the airport I feel a jealous urge... I want to be the one to leave!

HNL has a Japanese garden in the middle of the airport. I thought it was quite fitting that I was going to Japan at the time.

I took JAL during my first trip to Japan in 2005. I experienced the best service of any airline bar-none! (even though I was in coach).

Travel is one of my passions and I have been to: Japan , Philippines and Australia (all twice) not to mention all over the mainland including Mexico and Canada. That said, I'm still an ameteur compared to world-class travelers.

To be honest, I kinda struggled with this weeks assignment. I was thinking, I could feature Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki with the beach and countless resorts or even Kamehameha Hwy that literally goes around the island. I decided instead to showcase the main street in my hometown; Komo Mai Dr. I kinda went off subject but that's okay right? I'm glad there are no rules for these assignments!

E Komo Mai means "Welcome" in Hawaiian.

Last turn to Pacific Palisades

Komo Mai Dr. is the only road that links Palisades residents to the outside world. I remember one time that the road was blocked off. Being that I couldn't go home that night, I went to class the next day with my gym clothes on. Yeah, I hope that never happens again.

Chinaman's Hat

Every few years or so, my friends and I would make a voyage to Mokuli'i island, otherwise known as Chinaman's Hat. We would walk or swim to the island and then climb to the top, like in the movie "Rapa Nui". To those who have never been there, here are a few pointers:

1) Best to go during low tide (Check a tide chart). You can walk to the island during low tide, but bring a raft or floatation device just in case.

2) Chinaman's Hat is a bird sanctuary, and has also become a fire-ant sanctuary!

3) Check the beach for jellyfish, ask the lifeguard if there was a recent sewage spill (from the bathrooms) and don't forget to look out for sharks!

Hawaii Superferry

Update: Superferry officials have decided to suspend service to Hawaii and lay-off over 200 employees... dealing another blow to Hawaii's economy. On Monday, The Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that Act 2, (which allowed the Superferry to operate during the EIS) was unconstitutional and effectively shut down ferry service to the islands.

As I'm writing this, I'm bobbing up and down as the Superferry crosses the Kaiwi Channel. Sitting in the cabin facing the bow, the large panoramic windows provide a great view of the ocean ahead. The last time I was on the Superferry I was on the boat for 10 hours! (Superferry Trip - Kauai). As much as I enjoy a good boat ride, I'm hoping that the trip goes the regular 3 hours. I took some dramamine just in case.

UPDATE: The Rock also appeared in another SNL sketch called Hawaiian Holiday. He played a disgruntled local hula dancer who had some choice comments for tourists. The skit didn't sit well with our lieutenant governor (Duke Aiona) who said the skit "went to far". Eh, take it easy Duke... Wuz jus fo fun!

Target - Salt Lake

Occupying the old Costco site, the Salt Lake Target is among the nations largest. I was there on opening day amongst the crowds and curious shoppers. Being that I have a Wal-Mart near my home, I can't say that I was very impressed. Sure, the place was packed but I didn't notice a lot of people buying anything. Most people were simply window shopping, probably having never set foot in a Target store in their lives.

UFC Lightweight Champion, former Welterweight Champion, the first American to win the World Ju-jitsu Championship, The accolades go on... Tonight, the Hawaii native has the chance to become the first champion to hold two UFC belts at the same time.

It's no secret that many in Hawaii are cheering for BJ to win. However, not EVERYONE in Hawaii thinks he WILL win. His opponent, (current Welterweight Champ) George St. Pierre beat Penn by split decision in 2004 and looks to be the better fighter even now.

Who am I rooting for you ask? Well, BJ has two things going for him. For one thing, I have to root for the Hawaii guy (no exceptions). The other is the fact that he is the underdog going into the fight, and you gotta go with the underdog right? (Go Cardinals!) One may not agree with his trash talk and bravado but you have to respect him as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Sam Sato's

A fixture in Maui, Sam Sato's is one of those family-owned restaurants that serve great food. You may have to wait in line, but its definately worth the wait. Try their famous manju and fried noodles, you'll be back for more. If only the Superferry didn't shut down...

Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens

Kepaniwai was once the site of an ancient Hawaiian battle where Maui Warriors were killed by the invading force of Kamehameha I. So much blood was shed that day that the waters of Iao stream ran red.

Now, Kepaniwai has become a state park that is filled with structures that highlight Maui's various ethnic cultures and the buildings they lived in. Being part Japanese, I was facinated by the Japanese Tea house and gardens.

One of the things I miss most about Maui is the "grindz". You can have ice cream and potato chips just about anywhere but its just not the same as Maui Guri-Guri and Kitch'n Cook'd chips.

Tasty Crust

After going to Haleakala, we decided to have breakfast at Tasty Crust in Wailuku. As the sign suggested, we ordered a short stack of their world famous pancakes. I also ordered their breakfast special for good measure.

Once again, I forgot to take a picture of the pancakes before eating them. Tasty Crust's pancakes are much thicker than the traditional pancake and have much more flavor. The thing that sets their cakes apart is the "Tasty Crust" that forms on the pancake when it is cooked.

Haleakala

The trip to Haleakala almost never happened. The night before, the forecast was for heavy clouds and rain over the summit. We decided to sleep in the next morning. At 7am, we found that the cloud cover over Haleakala wasn't as bad so we decided to "chance 'um". I'm glad we did! Although the clouds did arrive when got to the summit, the journey was well worth it. I was hoping to see snow at the summit but had to settle for a bunch of clouds.

Today, I see my truck in the garage and have a hard time thinking that a few days ago it was at 10,000 feet. Cool!

In response, I wanted to start 2009 with my first blog entry featuring the valley isle of MAUI! The Komoda Store is a fixture in the town of Makawao in upcountry Maui. Known for their world famous creme puffs, a friend and I ordered a few boxes to bring back to Oahu. Thank God I brought my truck on the Superferry.

You tend to take things for granted (like electricity) until its gone. Tonight, Oahu suffered a island-wide power outage due to a lightning strike to a transformer. Luckily, I made it home safely and used a battery pack to power a small radio. Some speculated that it was a terrorist attack while the President-elect Obama is in town. I heard another rumor that there was a nuclear explosion on Kauai and the EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) blast blew out Oahu's power grid (If that were true I probably wouldn't be writing this:)

Obama is on Oahu spending Christmas with his family before heading to the White House. This is also his third trip to Hawaii in the past year. On Christmas day, he visited troops having dinner at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base.

Hawaii Superferry - Bye Bye Kauai!

Needless to say, I never made it to Kauai. Here's a first-hand account about what happened.

We left Honolulu harbor on time at 3pm. I thought that the loading process was quick and efficient. I entered the Superferry cabin and found everything to be new and state of the art. Flat screens were everywhere. Snack bars and soveneir shops were newly stocked.

The journey to Kauai was beautiful and scenic. I took countless photos of Honolulu harbor as we were leaving. The ride was smooth (if you were sitting down). Walking around deck while the ship is moving took some getting used to, but I soon got it down.

During our voyage, we heard stories of people in Kauai protesting the arrival of the superferry. Apparently, some surfers had formed a human barrier in the water to prevent the ferry from entering the harbor. We were expecting the same thing today with the expectation that the Coast Guard would provide safe entry into the harbor.

We were mistaken.

As we approached the entrance of Nawiliwili harbor a tugboat greated us. We knew that we would not be able to enter any time soon. We quickly noticed that the water was filled with surfers and canoe teams blocking the harbor entrance. We floated near the entrance of the Harbor for 3 hours watching canoe teams making rounds in front of the harbor. The Coast Guard, (clearly out-manned) frantically chased the much more agile surfers and paddlers all around the Harbor.

At about 9pm, the decision was made to return to Honolulu. Everyone on board was disappointed but knew that nothing could be done. We arrived in Honolulu at midnight, just in time to view the lunar eclipse from the ships vehicle hold.

Many people have asked me if I would go on the Superferry again. The answer is a resounding YES! Here are the reasons why:

1) I will recieve my $20 back
2) Free food while I was on board (sandwiches and drinks)
3) I got to stay at a hotel for a night when we arrived back to Honolulu (Ohana Honolulu Airport Hotel)
4) We were promised 5 ROUND-TRIP tickets for future Superferry cruises!

Not to mention that the crew were friendly and courteous including one of the owners of the Superferry who was also on board. I really admired that he walked around the ship talking to customers, taking care of hotel arrangements and addressing people's concerns. He even stood by the exit ramp while our cars were unloaded back in Honolulu.

I don't think this will be my last blog about the Hawaii Superferry!

Honolulu Marathon 2008

Update 12/14/2008:
Last year, I ran the Honolulu Marathon 10k just to get a feel for the race. This year, I decided to run the entire 26.2 miles. How did I do you ask? Well, I was able to run for 23 miles continuously and finished the marathon in just over 5 hours. Will I run the marathon next year?... We'll see!

Lost - Season One

I know what you're thinking, season five will be starting in January, why are you blogging about season one now? Well, for starters, I'm not a big Lost fan in the first place. Before yesterday, I don't think I ever watched an entire episode. I do however, have a little story regarding the first season.

Early 2003
Place: Mokuleia Beach
Time: Approximately 12:30am

A few friends and I were driving to meet others at a campsite near Mokuleia. We drove towards Camp Erdman in the dead of night. Being one of the most secluded areas on Oahu, the road was pitch dark with only our headlights and a glimmer of the moon to guide us. We could hear the waves crashing along the beach as we swerved to miss potholes in the road. All of a sudden, out of nowhere we see the remains of an airplane fuselage right on the side of the road.

I thought to myself "Oh, crap!","I don't remember hearing about a plane crash!" . We later realized that they were filming some obscure TV pilot somewhere on the North Shore. The same "obscure TV pilot" later became the phenomenon known as Lost.

Boy, this is a great time to be a Hawaii sports fan. With the smallest of athletes (Little League) to Olympic gold medalists, Hawaii can be proud of their newest Champions, getting it done at every level.

Yesterday, the boys from Waipio came back from a 5-1 deficit in the last inning to win the US Championship. Today, the Hawaii team completely destroyed the heavily favored Mexican team (12-3) to win the Little League World Series!

Affordable Housing

Tentatively called 1226 Waimanu, this 5 story condo will be directly across the ewa end of Ala Moana Center at the corner of Piikoi and Kona St. The location is also within walking distance of Ward Center. 1 Bedroom apartments are slated to start at $308,000.

Country Club Village 6 is an affordble condominium in Salt Lake that will be built in 2009. 1 bedroom apartments starting at $218,000.

Being a prospective first-time home buyer (Key word: prospective) I decided to see if I would at least qualify to purchase a unit. I got to the sales office at about 12:30pm. The office (trailer) officially opened at 10:30am.

As I approached the sales trailer I quickly noticed the long line before me. The line was at least 2 city blocks long. However, I was still able to see the front of the line so I decided to wait. Talking to people in front of me (in the back of the line) I heard horror stories of people who had been in line for two days & nights! After waiting for an hour, A security guard basically told us that we had little chance of getting in before the office closes a 4 pm. He did however told us we could camp there for the night... I decided it was time to leave.

I always heard of the shortage of affordable housing on Oahu. Today, I got to see it for myself.

Waikiki and Diamond Head

Today was an especially hazy day. A city maintanance worker told me it was because of "VOG". The Hawaiian version of smog, it is actually volcanic polution from the recent eruption of Mauna Kea. Luckily for us, we have tradewinds to blow the vog out to sea.

Like most American cities, we also have our own "Lovers Lane". The place where couples go to... you know :) If Honolulu ever had one, Tantalus would be it. Beautiful during sunset, you can also view the Honolulu city lights when the sun goes down.

Jason Mraz is back in the islands for Band Camp 6 with fellow headliners; 311 and Augustana at the Waikiki Shell. If I wasn't working today I would be there for sure!

I'm not a big fan of Jason Mraz. However I love the Hawaiian-inspired video and I gotta admit... the song is kinda catchy!

The video features footage from various Hawaiian islands and includes my favorite hiking / waterfall spot called Maunawili Falls.

The place where the three girls jumped into the water is called Maunawili Falls. Past the falls, you will find moss-covered rocks that act like a natural water-slide. Who needs Hawaiian Waters?

I suppose it was the people you meet on campus. At most, I see a couple dozen people regularly at work. I miss being around thousands of people from around the world during my college years. All of us were working for the same thing... the sheepskin (diploma).

Turtle Beach - Laniakea Beach

"Honey-Girl" a regular visitor to Lani's beach was found dead. The turtle was apparently slaughtered for meat and left on the beach. There is currently a $5000 reward for anyone who knows who killed the turtle.

The Hawaiian name for turtle is "honu" or in nihongo "kame"

Right off of Kam Hwy on the North Shore you will find Lani's Beach. The beach is better known as 'Turtle beach" because many turtles come there to rest. Protected by state law, it is illegal to touch a honu.

Jack Johnson - Taylor

Jack Johnson puts on an annual benefit concert called the Kokua Festival. The festival benefits The Kokua Hawaii Foundation which address environmental concerns around the islands. The last festival featured local and mainland acts including Tim Reynolds and Dave Matthews.

Dog the Bounty Hunter

Dog the Bounty Hunter officially returns to A&E. The show about "second chances" will give Dog another chance. This time though, Dog's leash will be significantly shorter.

Duane "Dog" Chapman is best known for his hit reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter". He is also known for the capture of Max Factor heir and serial rapist Andrew Luster in Mexico. I was at Borders where he was having an autograph session to promote his best selling book "You can run but you can't hide". Next to Dog is his wife and longtime companion Beth.

Many times Dog has to capture criminals around the island of Oahu. Sometimes the show features Dog and his team in Waikiki, Waipahu or other places on Oahu. Its fun to watch as many of the places where he catches criminals are Oahu neighborhoods. I believe that his show may be the most accurate view of the "real" Hawaii. Not that the islands are full of criminals running around but the show does portray local people and local problems.

Fat Boy's

Nestled in the new Waipio Shopping Center (near Costco) is Fat Boys Local Drive In. Their menu features the usual local favorites; Garlic Chicken, Beef Stew, Loco Moco etc... all made with a gourmet touch.

I went there during breakfast and tried their fried rice omelet plate. At $7.25 it was a bit pricey but the portion was enough for two. Oishi!!!!

Starbucks

As the economy worsens even the mighty Starbucks has decided to cut back. After years of building a Starbucks at every corner, 5 starbucks locations will be shut down across the islands.

FREE WIRELESS (2HRS) AT STARBUCKS!

The current economic situation has forced Starbucks to be more competitive. Starbucks has recently unveiled free Wi-Fi at most of their locations. One must register a Starbucks gift card on Starbucks.com and use their card at least once a month to get 2 hrs of Wi-Fi every day!

Theoretically, a person can buy a tall passion iced tea ($1.68 with tax) once a month with their card to get free Wi-Fi every day. Not a bad deal!

4th of July @ Magic Island

On July 4th, A few friends and I helped to set up a beach bbq at Magic Island. For those of you who have never been to Magic Island on the 4th, here is what you can expect.

1) To get a good spot you can either sleep-over the night before or be at the entrance to Magic Island at 4 am.

2) Choke (plenty) cops to enforce no fireworks rule till evening and drinking in the park.

3) Long lines for the bathroom - even longer for the ladies!

Was it all work it? ... Sure it was! I got to play some V-ball, hang out with some friends and ate some awesome grinds!

Kawaihao Church

Kawaihao Church is known as the oldest Christian Church on Oahu. A picturesque place for weddings, a friend of mine had his wedding there. Being in the wedding party, I remember feeling quite humbled being in such a historical and Holy place.

A friend who studies architecture told me that the orange facade of the design center is meant to represent the vibrant colors of lava.

At the corner of Kapiolani and Piikoi you will find the newly opened Honolulu Design Center . The crescent shaped, orange building stands out like a sore thumb compared to the surrounding cityscape. Inside, you will find a fine-dining restaurant, a wine bar and a furniture store. The two towers in the background are the Moana Pacific condo complex.

Dillingham Airfield

I was at Camp Mokuleia for a church camp. I couldn't help but notice the brighly-colored parachutes landing across the street at Dillingham Airfield. Since I had my camera handy, I decided to take some pics.

I heard that during certain parts of the year one of the skydiving companies offers a $99 tandem jump. I haven't tried skydiving yet, but at that price I'll be willing to give it a try!

The restaurant is located on the side of the Hokua building near Ward Center. According to PFC's website: the restaurant "specializes in a unique combination of Chinese cuisine, attentive service, wine, and tempting desserts all served in a stylish, high-energy bistro."

I haven't eaten there yet, but my friends tell me that the food is pretty good.

I've always admired Japanese gardens. If I had the yard for it, I'd love to have a fishpond full of Koi. At the East West Center on the UH Campus you'll find one of the best examples of a nihon teien (Japanese Garden) outside of Japan.

Honolulu Fire Department Headquarters

The headquarters of the Honolulu Fire Department is found in Kakaako on South St. The property encompasses the old Kakaako firehouse (museum) and the current fire station. A beautiful piece of architecture, the building(s) are a testament to the rich history of HFD.

The Hawaii State Library is the flagship of the Hawaii State Library system. In the audio/visual section one can rent DVDs for only a $1 a week with your library card. Just don't expect the latest titles.

Leonard's Malasadas (Waikele)

A Hawaii favorite, Leonard's original store is in Kapahulu. In Waikele, they have a mobile stand which sell the popular "portugese donut". I had a malasada "puff" which is a malasada filled with custard... Oishi!

NEX - Pearl Harbor

Here's a pic of the Navy Exchange Pearl Harbor. The World's largest NEX contains an Exchange, Commisary and Food Court. If you want to shop there you will need someone with a military ID to sponsor you in. A great place to buy omiyage, you don't have to pay Hawaii sales tax.

Pali Lookout

One of the most prominent stories of survival from a fall off the Pali was by local evangelist Danny Yamashiro .

Urban legend: A person once jumped off the Pali lookout to commit suicide. The winds was so strong that the person was blown back up to the observation deck. I guess it wasn't his time yet!

I found this book at Barnes & Nobles Ala Moana. I was looking for a book that would show me how to take better digital camera photos in Hawaii. (I've been trying to update my "Nature / Outdoor" section with nature photos). The book does not cover much technical information but does show vivid Hawaii photos and how and when to take them. A great book for any photographer or Hawaii fan.

Reset targets

A friend of mine took me to the shooting range the other week. Not only was this the first time I shot a handgun, it was the first time I shot a loaded gun... period.

Needless to say, I was a little nervous at first. However, after learning the basics of gun safely I was putting holes through the target like swiss cheese. Too bad it wasn't the orange target (see above picture).

Next time: Rifle practice!

Waipahu Festival Marketplace

I just happened to be there on their grand opening to the public. (The Marketplace is clearly not finished yet.) A collaboration between the State and local vendors, the Waipahu Festival Marketplace is meant to rejuvenate the area. The market would allow small businesses retail space in a building, much like a "mini chinatown"

I'm not a gamer, but when I heard there was a racing game based entirely on Oahu, I had to see for myself. The game came out on the Xbox 360 nearly a year ago with various other consoles later. I bought a copy of the PC version on Ebay for a good price.

Sand Island Beach Park

Sand Island beach park overlooks Honolulu Harbor with great views of downtown Honolulu and Aloha Tower. Originally developed by the city as a family beach park, in recent years the park has fallen into disrepair. Recently, there has been a proposal to change the park into a off-road /4x4 track. Now thats a great idea!

The Contemporary Museum

I've lived in Hawaii for my entire life, yet this was the first time I had the chance to visit The Contemporary Museum. Located on Makiki Heights Drive, the museum was once the home of Mrs Charles Montague Cooke in 1925.

The Spaulding House (named after Mrs Cooke's daughter) was offered as the site of the contemporary museum in 1986. The museum opened to the public in 1988.

If you decide to visit the museum, I would suggest you tour the museum with a guide. My guide was very knowledgable about the museum and its many exhibits. Pictures are not allowed for the indoor exhibits, but can be taken of the outdoor gardens and sculptures.

Kua Aina - Ward

Kua Aina's original restaurant is in Haleiwa, but they have another location in Honolulu and numerous locations in Japan. Above is a picture of their Ward location. Known for their avocado burger, some say that the North Shore location is still the best.
